Poems Comparative

Is incredible how languages can be shaped by the people that speak it, maybe because of the social class or the place they live, and if you try to understand them you will be following different interesting stories that they have. Poems are a good example because they show different languages and traditions, so release you imagination and understand a new world of words.

In the “the soldier” poem, the author uses a formal language with a tone of proud and nostalgia, the second one “colonization in reverse” is used by the author a colloquial language and a happy informal tone to express the feeling of happiness and also nostalgia about what is going on in its country, but both are similar in something, they show proud of their country but in different way. They both give details using images to show the level of proud to their people and country, but in a big way, they words show a big patriotic love. Using a proud tone they show the biggest theme in their poems and the reason of the poem to be, their big proudness to their nation and the other prouder of his people.

“The soldier” is a formal poem, from an author that is showing his love to a country. He uses a formal language by giving formal words to show his way of thinking. He also uses the repeat of thoughts but using different words to show it and different examples and images to make the reader enter rapidly into a new imaginational world. The use of straight language, to put it in some way, may also have an impact in the tone of the author because using the formal language and combining it with the nostalgia and patriotic love, it makes you to get the point of the reading and to receive a little of the proud overflowing in the poem. Saying “Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home” the author gives an image of the proud of his country, of how the love of the little and big things that this English place is giving to it. He talks about how a foreign land gives him nostalgia about how living in his country makes feel him. He says that the memory of his country that the place where he is, is giving to him, enhances a nostalgic thinking into the land of his childhood and life.

In the poem “colonization in reverse” the author shows the proud of his nation but more deeply of his compatriots, the people of Jamaica. The author use a colloquial way of speaking proper from Jamaica to speak about his proudness, maybe she used that kind of writing to show how the make him proud because the poem was related to them, and she wanted all them to understand his words. But this way of writing gives a poem a deep characterization of the behaviours of the Jamaican people and adds an image to our minds showing the happiness in the place because of the people in Jamaica growing in their achievements, and getting in a place certainly never though by their ancestors. The authors puts the Jamaican people as people that achieve to get in better social classes in a world rules by the Europeans that conquered those lands. She is really proud about how the people is carrying the country in a different way, could be understood as carrying in reverse. The happiness of his words contrasts with nostalgia of an achievement that maybe she never believes his people to get, so that increases the proud tone in his words.

In conclusion the authors used the appropriate type of language to express the feelings that they wanted to express using the right grammatical forms to do it. In the soldier poem, the author used a formal language to express the feelings, this was better to express this because is a more nostalgic tone and lights more the images that the author wanted to express; while in the colonization in reverse the author used a colloquial language in a happy and ironic way, this is the most useful tone and language because the authors express less nostalgia but more proudness and happiness because the things that are going on with his people. Both did the right thing expressing the feelings they want and I think that the way that they write is the correct to express those feelings because the use of colloquial language in the second is the one that would be understood by the people that is directed to, and the second with the formal tone and use of words gives a dry nostalgic and strong feeling about the history that the poem is telling. Nothing more than proud is shown by the authors.
